Collection includes letterbooks, 1723-1724 and 1727-1730 (3 v.), of Robert Carter (1663-1732) of "Corotoman," Lancaster County, Va., primarily concerning Scottish merchants and the tobacco trade between Virginia and Great Britain, the sale of African-American slaves, and the Northern Neck Proprietary of Virginia; miscellaneous legal and financial records; records of the operation of extensive landholdings in the Northern Neck of Virginia; and estate materials. Also, includes correspondence, 1754-1804, of Robert Carter (1728- 1804) of "Nomini Hall," Westmoreland County, and Williamsburg, Va., and Baltimore, Md., concerning his service on the Virginia Colonial Council, the Episcopal and Baptist faiths, emancipation of slaves in the 1790s, the rental and operation of landholdings in the Northern Neck of Virginia, the services of British merchants, and the Baltimore Iron Works. Also, includes Carter's accounts, land records (especially for Loudoun, Prince William, Fairfax, and Westmoreland counties), materials concerning the construction and operation of grist mills in Westmoreland County, and legal records. Also, includes personal and business correspondence, 1798-1841, and accounts of George Carter (1777-1846) of "Oatlands," Loudoun County, Va., and miscellaneous papers of other members of the Carter and Tasker families of Virginia and Maryland.
